For many people living with IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD), the search for answers can be one of the most challenging parts of the journey. 

Symptoms may develop gradually, affect different organs, or appear unrelated at first. As a result, patients often find themselves navigating multiple appointments, tests, and referrals before receiving an accurate diagnosis.

In Session 2 of the IgG4ward! EuroJAM educational series, Dr. Emma Culver explores why diagnosing IgG4-RD can be so complex and what can be done to improve recognition of the disease.

Drawing on her clinical experience and expertise, Dr. Culver explains how IgG4-RD can present in many different ways and why patients are often referred to multiple specialists before the pieces of the puzzle come together. She discusses the challenges physicians face when distinguishing IgG4-RD from other inflammatory conditions, infections, and cancers, as well as the importance of combining clinical history, imaging, laboratory testing, and biopsy findings to support an accurate diagnosis.

Throughout the presentation, Dr. Culver acknowledges the uncertainty, anxiety, and frustration that many patients experience during the diagnostic process. She also highlights the progress being made through increased physician awareness, collaboration across specialties, patient advocacy, and ongoing research efforts aimed at improving diagnosis and care.
